On weather deck on port watch
It was on weather deck that life on Pommern played out. It was a society in miniature, with relationships, hierarchies and conflicts that had to be solved. Work was hard and all were equally at the mercy of the power of nature.
Step into life onboard and experience life as a sailor in the 1930s. Pommern is making her annual voyage on the Australian grain trade and you get to eavesdrop on the crew. On eleven different spots you hear the deckhand Johan, the cook Henry, the mate Taisto, donkeyman Edgar, stewart Paul, second mate Harald and captain Karlsson having conversations with each other. At the same time you follow Pommern’s route from Mariehamn, via Copenhagen to Port Victoria in Australia, and home again by Cape Horn, via London and back to Mariehamn.
Everything you hear has happened in real life on Pommern.
I’m going back to Åland, once we return next year. I’ll have presents for everyone, things no-one here has ever seen before. I’ll show them that it wasn’t just empty words when I said I’d travel to Australia and back.
