THE VISITOR EXPERIENCE
Pommern - 100 days under sail
The new onboard exhibition and visitor experience is a journey in three acts where activities, soundtracks and facts bring you close to history and on a passage to Australia and back again. Step into life onboard and experience life as a sailor in the 1930s.
Welcome on board!
Weather deck
Weather deck was where Pommern’s crew worked day and night, sometimes risking life and limb. This was where life-long friendships were made.
On weather deck you meet Pommern’s crew and eavesdrop on life aboard.
Tween deck
On tween deck you participate in work and leisure aboard. Here you learn more about provisioning and sail making, about the equatorial baptism as well as celebrate Pommern’s arrival in London with dancing on deck.
On tween deck you can also see a film, where you follow one of Pommern’s voyages to Australia through film clips from life on board and interviews with members of the crew.
Cargo hold
Bags of grain from Australia to Europe were stowed in Pommern’s vast cargo hold. Today the space is empty, and you can see the ship all the way down to the keel.
In the cargo hold the visitors get to experience a unique audio-visual show that recreates the weather Pommern endured during her voyage across the oceans. It also draws attention to how vulnerable the crew was in the face of Nature.
The children's Pommern
Visit Pommern with the whole family – here is something for everyone. The children have their own guide on board, Ruby the ship’s rat. With the help of the soundtrack “Ruby’s voyage” the children will experience life on weather deck on Pommern and learn a few secrets about life aboard.
